somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond

So it is a lover who speaks and who says:

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously)her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility:whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens;only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

(C. Bley, e.e. cummings)

Oh, miraculous Susanne Abbuehl.  The way she crafts this ‘song’ does not cease to amaze me. Several of the songs from this album use poems by e.e. cummings. And also the music of Carla Bley is featured on several tracks. But the idea of combining the two in the form of ‘just’ reciting the poem to Bley’s “Seven” is pure genius.

How is it possible that two works of art that were created independently of one another can blend so perfectly that you cannot think of them apart anymore? And is it too cheesy to equate this to 2 people = 1 pair of lovers?

The miracle of the ‘composition’ of this song is matched by its stunning execution. Imagine all the things that could have gone wrong. Just try to recite the poem yourself. Cumming’s rich imagery almost inevitably forces you to over-emote. The tenderness of the words is always in danger of being destroyed by the presence of the performer. But Susanne Abbuehl caresses these words in such an intimate way that you feel compelled to murmur: Indeed, “nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals the power of your intense fragility.” But should there be something equal, let me know!
